Betuwe freight-only railway on track
With 525 trains a week using the cargo-only Betuwe railway from Rotterdam to Germany’s Ruhr district, Keyrail has beaten its own target, the operator reports on Thursday.
Keyrail forecast in 2010 that this year the track would carry 400 trains a week.
The growth is attributed to new companies using the railway and to an increase in the amount of coal and ore being transported.
The Betuwe railway, which cost €4.7bn to build and opened in 2007, is still not making a profit.
