Amsterdam’s blue chip AEX index opened down 1.6% on Monday morning and, despite a short lived recovery, fell still further in morning trading.

By 13.00 hours, the AEX was down 2.8% on Friday’s close, at around 289. The drop in Amsterdam was stronger than that in Berlin and Paris.
Traders had forecast sharp falls across the European exchanges following mounting debt fears and Friday’s mass sale of stocks.
