Working visits popular during MPs summer break

MPs will make an average of two work-related trips during the nine-week summer break, most of which only last a couple of hours, the NRC reports on Thursday.

In total, 90 of the 150 MPs will make at least one work-related visit – with ChristenUnie and Groenlinks MPs leading the way. Thirty of the 187 visits which NRC researchers identified entail trips abroad.
No political party has specific rules for working during the summer break, but all are in favour of using the time to improve links between politicians and the general public.
Hospitals and prisons
In the Netherlands, visits to healthcare institutions, police stations, courts and prisons are most popular while foreign destinations include the US, Germany, Egypt, Kenya and Mozambique.
ChristenUnie MP Cynthia Ortega-Martijn is spending six weeks working on the Antilles in the Caribbean.
Not all MPs have plans to work during the break. VVD MP Helma Neppérus told the paper she plans to do some cycling and referee a rowing world championship.
