Vegetable growers want green light from Brussels to cut production

Some 95% of Dutch market gardeners who supply wholesalers and supermarkets have signed an official request to Brussels to be allowed to cut production.

They want to reduce supplies of cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, aubergines and lettuce in order to keep prices up, Nos television reports.
But this would break EU competition rules, which is why Brussels needs to approve the temporary reduction. Nos says the Dutch government backs the plan.
The request follows the recent E-coli crisis, which saw demand for salad vegetables collapse and forced down prices.
