Rotterdam hospital ignores hygiene rules

The Maasstad hospital in Rotterdam is ignoring elementary rules for containing the spread of bacterial infections, tv news organisation Nos said on Tuesday.

The hospital has had a number of cases of multi-resistant Klebsiella pneumonia since October 2010 and 21 patients who contracted the bacteria have now died.
In a series of interviews with the families of the dead and with hospital insiders, Nos has discovered that one patient was not isolated until seven weeks after contracting the infection. The rules state that infected patients should be isolated immediately.
Even when patients were isolated, hospital staff were lax about following the rules and staff walked in and out of the isolation ward without putting on protective clothing.
The hospital said it follows the rules laid down by the workgroup Infection Prevention, says the Nos.
