Prime minister talks economic cooperation with Flanders
Officials from the Netherlands and the Belgium region of Flanders are holding talks on economic cooperation on Monday, the Financieele Dagblad reports.
Prime minister Mark Rutte and Flemish counterpart Kris Peeters will also discuss the Netherlands’ decision not to flood the Hedwige polder in Zeeland after all, the paper says.
However, a spokesman for Rutte said talks on the polder will take place on the sidelines, with junior economic affairs minister Henk Bleker set to pick up the issue in the coming weeks. Belgium is not happy that the Netherlands has back-tracked on its earlier commitment, the paper says.
Birds
The Hedwige polder is an important feeding and breeding area for tens of thousands of birds, but was due to be flooded as compensation for the loss of land caused by deepening the Westerschelde estuary.
Business leaders and the heads of Rotterdam and Antwerp ports are also set to join the meeting later in the day.
