Mayor tells police not to deport family to Afghanistan
The mayor of the north-eastern town of Coevorden has told the local police force not to cooperate with the deportation of an Afghan Tajiki family, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.
Immigration minister Gerd Leers said last week the Qadiri family, which includes a nine-year-old girl who was born in the Netherlands, should be deported.
But mayor Bert Bouwmeester, who is also chief of police, says the ruling is unacceptable on humanitarian grounds. The family’s two children, Amina, 9, and Dawud, 11 are completely westernised and could no longer adapt, he says.
Humanitarian grounds
The family says it cannot return to Afghanistan because the mother is a Christian from Tajikistan and is not welcome there. The father, in turn, is not allowed to enter Tajikistan.
Leer says the family has delayed the asylum procedure and is itself responsible for the fact it has taken 10 years to assess their claim.
Coevorden council has scheduled an emergency council meeting for Thursday to discuss the issue.
