Fines for breaking smoking ban doubled

The fines for cafes and bars which allow smoking on their premises are to be doubled because current fines are not effective, health minister Edith Schippers has announced.

The fine for a first-time offence is to go up to €600, while repeat offenders can face a maximum fine of €4,500.
Government inspectors said last month that 42% of bars, cafes and clubs which should ban smoking have put ashtrays back on tables.
Last year, the government lifted the ban on smoking in smaller bars and cafes without personnel.
