Budget day embargos revised again
While politicians will have to wait until the government presents its annual spending plans on the third Tuesday in September, journalists may again be given the documents under embargo on the Friday before, the Volkskrant reports.
For the past two years, journalists have had to wait until the queen makes her annual speech from the throne to find out about the cabinet’s plans. The decision not to give the press advance copies follows a string of leaks.
However, media outlets complain this makes it impossible for them to produce extra supplements focusing on the budget for Wednesday’s papers. Ministers will discuss the proposed change at Friday’s cabinet meeting.
Despite the lack of advance copies, much of the budget was also leaked to the press last year.
