95th four-day walk starts in Nijmegen
The 95th edition of the Nijmegen four-day walk – or Vierdaagse – kicked off at around 04.00 hours on Tuesday, with 42,812 participants.
This year walkers have been warned to take extra socks and waterproof clothing because rain has been forecast for the entire week.
In 2010, walkers, who cover either 50, 40 or 30 km on each of the four days, had to deal with very high temperatures.
The Vierdaagse was originally a military exercise, launched in 1909 to keep soldiers fit after the introduction of motor vehicles. The Nijmegen event is the biggest in the country.
