Telecom watchdog backtracks on cable competition

Cable companies UPC and Ziggo do not have to open their networks to competitors after all, telecoms sector watchdog Opta said on Thursday.

Opta said the change of heart follows ‘rapid developments’ in the television market which mean there has been an increase in competition. Some 70% of the Dutch currently have a digital tv and digitalisation has opened up the market, Opta says.
Alternative suppliers such as Tele2 can access the national television market via KPN’s network which should be opened to competition, Opta said.
The decision to force UPC and Ziggo to allow competitors to use their networks dates from 2008.
