No separate status for religious schools: D66
Left-wing liberal D66 MP Boris van der Ham wants the freedom of education law modernised because it has been stretched too far and is used to cover up wrong-doings, he told De Pers on Tuesday.
De Ham says the current law allows schools not to call the police when crimes are committed, to refuse unmarried or homosexual teachers and pupils with a different religion, and to keep school boards in place when they have made mistakes.
‘Failing school boards such as the islamic college in Amsterdam are allowed to begin a new school the following day,’ he told De Pers.
Subsidies for religious schools should be limited to primary education, the MP said.
