MPs tell ministers to look at home care cut alternatives
A majority of MPs on Tuesday told the cabinet to rethink its plans for slashing spending on grants to help people with physical or mental handicaps live independently.
Under the cabinet’s plans, 117,000 people who currently get money to buy care services, known as a PGB grant, will have to rely on council provisions or friends and family for help. Just 10% of current claimants will continue to get financial help to allow them to choose which services they need to enable them to live at home.
Organisation Per Saldo, which represents the interests of people who get a PGB grant, has drawn up a list of alternatives to the cuts. MPs have now told ministers to look into the different options with Per Saldo to see if the effects can be softened.
