Journey time and distance to determine taxi fares from October
The cost of a taxi journey will be determined by a combination of time and distance from later this year if parliament backs plans by transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen to introduce the double fee.
Passengers will also be given a printed receipt with the cost of their trip and how it was calculated, the minister says.
The fares have been calculated to make sure average prices do not go up and that taxi drivers’ average income does not go down, news agency ANP says.
Passengers will pay a fee of 30 cents per minute, €1.83 a kilometre and a basic charge of €2.50.
The minister is currently in talks with the sector on the technical changes needed to make sure the new system, which will come into effect on October 1, actually works.
