The herring season was officially launched in the seaside resort of Scheveningen on Tuesday with the traditional auction of a barrel of fish in aid of charity.

This year, the barrel fetched €67,500, which will go to a children’s charity. It was bought by a new fish promotion initiative. Herring experts say this year’s catch is of ‘exceptional quality’.
