Defence minister warns of naive expectations over Libya
Defence minister Hans Hillen on Wednesday forecast heated debate with Nato about the future of the military campaign in Libya if it is not over by the end of September, news agency Reuters reports.
In addition, Hillen said Nato allies who thought bombing would force Muammar Gaddafi to step down are ‘naive’ and that a political solution is needed for the region.
The mission should be confined to its UN mandate to protect civilians, the Dutch minister said. ‘If it changes into driving out a dictator, then the question is whether Nato should accept this as a new task.’
The Netherlands has six F-16 fighter jets and a minesweeper patrolling the seas and airspace to support the weapons embargo. The Netherlands has come under pressure from the US to do more, but Hillen said the Dutch are ‘contributing fairly’.
