Commission ‘shocked’ at abuse in child care
A commission set up to look into the abuse of children in state-run homes or state-funded foster care said it was shocked at its finding during a press conference on Wednesday.
The commission, led by former procurator-general Rieke Samson-Geerlings, said around 500 people contacted them about abuse, mainly victims who are now adults.
Of the 500 cases, 80% concerned rape and for 65% the abuse continued for at least a year.
The commission, which was looking at the period1945 to the present, says in the early years most victims were boys in institutions. The emphasis has gradually shifted to girls in foster families.
The full report will be published in July 2012.
