Chemie-Pack director arrested in connection with fire

The director of chemical packaging company Chemie-Pack which went up in flames in January, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with the fire.

Police also arrested two of the company’s production executives and a coordinator, Trouw reports. The four men are suspected of breaking safety and environmental rules.
Chemie-Pack was warned in 2002 that it would face sanctions for breaking fire regulations and between 2007 and 2009 was criticised for not storing chemicals properly. It was threatened with a fine three times and in 2006 was ordered to pay €13,000 because its fire extinguishing system was not in order.
Damages
The massive fire caused damage totalling €4.1m to other companies and private individuals, according to town council calculations.
The figure does not include damage to the Chemie-Pack plant itself or the clean-up.
In total, the council says it has 138 damages claims, mainly from agricultural companies close to the blaze.
