Princess Máxima marked her 40th birthday on Tuesday launching a new project to encourage children to take up a musical instrument.

The idea for the project came from the princess herself and is being funded by two culture and community-orientated trusts.
Máxima said she had had the idea for several years and hoped that in 10 years time, 25% of children aged eight to 14 would have participated in the scheme.
‘If it is your birthday, you usually get presents. I want to give myself, or rather the children of the Netherlands, a present instead,’ she said.
