Checks on overloaded lorries are failing
Overloaded lorries on Dutch roads are not being checked because the safety system installed by the transport ministry’s road management organisation Rijkswaterstaat is not working properly.
The aging measuring equipment is being replaced but will not be in full working order until the summer, the organisation told the AD.
Overloaded lorries cause damage to road surfaces and are a danger to other road users. According to Rijkswaterstaat, 15% of the 100,000 heavy lorries per day are overloaded in order to avoid an extra journey.
