Thousands attend funeral service for shot policeman
The funeral of the 48-year-old policeman, shot dead by a failed asylum seeker a week ago, has taken place at the Martini church in Groningen.
Justice minister Ivo Opstelten was among the mourners, who included 2,000 police officers from all over the country.
The officer was shot by his own gun in a struggle with a 25-year-old man who is suspected of battering his girlfriend to death in the village of Baflo.
It later emerged the man, who has a history of psychiatric problems, heard that day he was to be deported. He came to the Netherlands as an unaccompanied minor when he was 15.
