Police officer shot dead ‘with own gun’

A policeman has been shot dead and an unidentified woman battered to death in the northern town of Baflo in Groningen province.

The shooting happened shortly after police went to a flat in the town to follow up reports of a serious domestic incident. There the police found the body of the young woman, who appeared to have been battered to death with a fire extinguisher.
They immediately began a hunt for the suspected killer, who was spotted by another police officer at the town’s station. In the ensuing struggle, the alleged killer got hold of the police officer’s gun and shot him three times in the head.

According to the Telegraaf, the man then began shooting wildly, slightly injuring another police officer and a passer-by.
The man then made off along the railway but was shot in the leg by police reinforcements and arrested.
The scene has been sealed off and an investigation is under way.
