No change planned in abortion limit

There is no reason to change the time limit for abortion, despite medical advances in keeping very young premature babies alive, health minister Edith Schippers said on Tuesday.

The current limit in the Netherlands is 24 weeks and the orthodox religious parties SGP and ChristenUnie are pressuring the government to reduce this, Trouw reports.
The minister told parliament there are ‘insufficient medical, legal and practical reasons to reduce the limit’ and that there is ‘no legislation on this issue in preparation’.
The Netherlands has one of the lowest abortion rates in the world and very few late abortions.
