Minister seeks talks on fire service revamp

Security minister Ivo Opstelten will hold talks with the fire service organisation VBV on Thursday about the planned reorganisation, the Telegraaf reports.

The government wants to close many small fire stations and focus on 25 regional operations.
Opstelten made the appointment following comments by the volunteer fire service that many volunteer officers would step down if the reorganisation goes ahead. ‘Volunteers are extremely important and we must cherish them,’ he told the paper.
But he added that it is not a question of whether the fire service will reorganise but when. ‘So it’s sensible to be involved now so you have more influence on how it is done,’ according to Opstelten.
