Megalithic tomb damaged by fire

The ancient burial chamber or hunebed on the Groningerweg in Diever in Drenthe has been damaged by fire, with the heat causing one of the massive stones to crack and shatter, local police said on Tuesday.

Hunebeds are megalithic tombs constructed from upright stones with a flat horizontal cap stone. The Netherlands has some 54 tombs, mostly concentrated in Drenthe.
Hunebed enthusiasts who maintain the listed monument say the fire was started sometime over the past two weeks and reported it to the police. They suspect youngsters may have been having a party at the stones and lit a fire.
