Juvenile prisons in chaos: RTL news
The situation at secure juvenile detention centres in the Netherlands is chaotic, according to a report by RTL news.
Staff are regularily attacked by inmates and say they cannot cope with the growing agression, RTL said. In 2010 there were 108 violent incidents, up from 62 in 2009.
In addition, inmates regularily abscond. Last year 786 youngsters ‘disappeared’ from the centres for more than 24 hours.
Gemma Tielen, chief inspector of youth prisons, told the news programme: ‘At some institutions, the staff are saying they do not feel expert enough to cope with this group of youngsters… and I find that very worrying.’
