Give some students more time to get a degree, say MPs
A majority of MPs say students who take a year out to serve on a student committee or other organisation should be given longer to finish their degrees before their fees are increased.
Junior education minister Halbe Zijlstra is planning to increase tuition fees for students who take longer than four years to finish a degree by €3,000 a year.
But most MPs, including those from Zijlstra’s own Liberal party, say an alternative system should be worked out to support students who devote a year to a student body management job.
MPs will debate the plan next week.
