Don’t ban ritual slaughter, say Jewish groups
Jewish organisations have urged MPs not to introduce a ban on the ritual slaughter of animals, saying it would conflict with freedom of religion legislation.
MPs will soon debate draft legislation from the animal rights party PvdD which would ban ritual slaughter without anaesthetic.
In February, Nos television said 364.800 cows, chickens, sheep and goats are ritually slaughtered each year in line with Jewish and Muslim requirements.
The PvdD’s plan is unlikely to win majority support in parliament.
