Confusion over egg-freezing plan

Health minister Edith Schippers has not given the green light to hospital plans to offer human egg freezing services to healthy women as reported in the Dutch media, she told MPs on Wednesday.

The misunderstanding follows the publication of a letter from IVF clinics announcing their plans to go ahead with the programme immediately At the moment, egg freezing is only allowed for the purposes of scientific research.
At the same time, the minister coincidently published her own letter reacting to the advice of a number of experts in the field. In that letter, she said the advice provided a ‘good basis’ to allow egg freezing.
The minister told MPs the hospitals’ letter had surprised her. She has now asked them to explain on what grounds they are allowing women to freeze their eggs.
