One in 20 teachers to get bonus for excellence
Junior education minister Halbe Zijstra is to begin experimenting with performance-related pay for teachers, Nos television reports.
One in 20 teachers will be branded ‘excellent’, entitling them to more pay and an extra day off per week, Nos says. The money could mount up to €2,500 a year.
The experiment follows formal recommendations from the education council, which says the measure will boost educational standards.
The current culture at schools is one of ‘everyone does the same, everyone can do the same and everyone earns the same,’ the council said in its report.
Teaching unions are against giving some teachers bonuses, arguing it will cause divisions among teaching staff and is open to abuse.
The education council has also called for an increase in educational levels for teachers, saying that they should all eventually have a masters degree.
