Minister delays Afghan girl court hearing, needs more time

Immigration minister Gerd Leers has asked the Council of State to delay hearing the case of 14-year-old Afghan girl Sahar Hbrahim Gel who faces deportation to Afghanistan.

The girl and her family have lived in the Netherlands for 10 years. Leers said he wants more time to assess the effect of the deportation on Sahar’s education. She is in the pre-university stream at her school in Groningen.
Lower courts ruled that Sahar is too westernised to be sent back to the strict Muslim country, leading Leers to appeal to the Council of State.
No new date for the hearing has been set.
