‘Thousands claim welfare without being registered’

Tens of thousands of people are getting welfare benefits even though they are not officially registered as living in the town where they are making the claim, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

In Amsterdam alone, 30,000 people are claiming welfare (bijstand) without being official residents, the paper says.
The paper bases its claims on figures from the UWV job agencies and the tax office. Because these organisations’ data bases are not always linked to local authority registries it is easy for people to make fraudulent claims, the paper says, without giving further details.
