Portrait of mutilated Afghan girl is World Press Photo

A photograph of a young Afghan girl whose nose had been sliced off by the Taliban is this year’s World Press Photo winner, the Amsterdam-based organisation announced on Friday.

The portrait, by South African photographer Jodi Bieber, was used as the cover of an issue of Time magazine. The girl, Bibi Aisha, mutilated for leaving her violent husband, now lives in the US and is undergoing reconstructive surgery.
