Nearly 50,000 students started university last year

A total 49,788 new students signed up at the 14 Dutch universities at the beginning of the current academic year, down 1% on 2009, according to university association VSNU.

Social sciences remain the most popular subjects, with psychology and social geography leading the way. Economics is the most popular subject among foreign students, news agency ANP quotes the VSNU as saying.
Over 240,000 students are currently studying for a university degree.
