Schiedam considers firework ban

The mayor of Schiedam is looking into implementing a ban on fireworks for all but professional companies, news agency ANP reports.

‘We believe taxpayers’ money can be better spent on investing in Schiedam than repairing [firework] damage,’ Wilma Verver is quoted as saying.
Firework damage in Schiedam, close to Rotterdam, amounted to €85,000 this New Year, a city council spokesman said. ‘But this does not include the cost of cleaning up the mess and damage to private property,’ he said.
Campaign

Last year, two GroenLinks MPs started a campaign to get the sale of fireworks banned and collected over 60,000 signatures to force a parliamentary debate.
But the campaign collapsed because there was not enough support in parliament.
Two people were killed during this year’s firework free-for-all.
