Dutch Iranian woman sentenced to death: radio station
Dutch Iranian woman Zahra Bahrami has been sentenced to death in Iran for smuggling drugs and undermining the state, Dutch world service radio reports on Wednesday.
The radio station bases its claims on an interview her daughter, Banafsheh Najebpour who said the court delivered its ruling on Sunday but that her mother’s defence lawyer had not been allowed to break the news earlier.
Bahrami, 45, was born in Iran but later moved to the Netherlands and became a Dutch citizen. She was arrested in Iran in December 2009 after returning to visit relatives.
The Dutch ambassador to Iran has been refused permission to visit her because Tehran does not recognise her double nationality.
Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal has asked the Iranian ambassador in The Hague to clarify the sentencing, Nos tv reports.
