Snow affects Schiphol flights, slows traffic, halts trains
Dozens of flights from Schiphol airport were delayed or cancelled on Saturday morning due to heavy snow and a strike by Spanish air traffic controllers.
Several airports in the UK and Germany are also closed because of the weather, further adding to the problems.
The airport is using snow ploughs to keep runways clear. More heavy snow and black ice is expected on Saturday evening, the KNMI weather bureau said.
Motoring organisation ANWB reported few accidents because of the snow but public transport in The Hague has been affected.
‘It is very quiet on the roads and they have been well-gritted,’ a spokesman told news agency ANP.
Rail services were also hit in the west and east of the country because of problems with the points. In particular, services between Rotterdam andUtrecht and Den Haag and Utrecht were affected.
Overnight the snow is expected to turn to black ice. On Sunday it will start to thaw, particularly in coastal areas, but rain will freeze when it hits the frozen ground, leading to very slippery conditions, the ANWB said.
