More children are growing up in poverty
The number of children growing up in poverty in the Netherlands went up last year from 8% to 9%, according to new figures from the government’s socio-cultural planning agency SCP.
In total, 311,000 children are growing up in households which are below the official poverty line, the SCP said.
One parent families and single people are most likely to live in poverty. In particular, 65% of welfare benefit claimants are officially classed as poor.
Income
According to Trouw, a single parent household is considered poor if total income is below €1310 a month for one child and €1490 for two.
Some 40% of poor households do not have money to buy clothes and 11% cannot afford a hot meal with meat, fish or chicken on a daily basis, the SCP said.
In 2000, one in 10 children grew up in a poor household, a situation which led to concerted government and local authority efforts to reduce the total.
