Wilders slaps six week speaking ban on MP with fraud conviction
PVV leader Geert Wilders has slapped a six-week silence on MP Jhim Bemmel for lying about his criminal convictions.
On Wednesday it emerged Bemmel has a 2006 conviction for fraud involving cargo shipments. Wilders has also taken away some of Bemmel’s parliamentary responsibilities.
‘Van Bemmel may not speak about anything [in parliament] until the end of the Christmas break,’ Wilders told reporters. The recess lasts until January 10.
Fifth MP
Bemmel is the fifth of the 24 PVV MPs to come under the spotlight since the June election.
Last week, James Sharpe resigned following allegations about his business dealings and private life.
Former army sergeant Eric Lucassen has been allowed to stay on as an MP by party leader Geert Wilders, despite lying about his criminal record for having an inappropriate relationship with an army recruit and intimidating his neighbours.
Richard de Mos has been forced to admit he was never a school director as claimed in his official cv and interviews.
In September, former army officer Marcial Hernandez was arrested after reportedly giving someone – said to be a civil servant from the economic affairs department – a head butt in a bar. Police are still investigating.
