Trade unionists are growing old

Trade union members are going grey, according to figures released on Monday by national statistics office CBS. In 1973, 282,000 members were under 25. The figure is now just 71.000.

The CBS says this can be accounted for by the drop in the number of under 25s and the fact they start working later in life.
There are also more members staying on after they reach pensionable age, the figures show. In 1973 they accounted for 8% of the membership. In 2010 this rose to 13.5%.
Overall, membership dropped by 17,000 in 2009.
