MPs back compulsory primary school testing

A majority of MPs back the introduction of a compulsory exam for all children leaving primary school, the Telegraaf reports on Wednesday.

At the moment, some 80% of schools use a test by private organisation Cito to assess standards.
The introduction of a compulsory school leaving test was put forward by the ruling VVD with support of the populist PVV.
VVD MP Ton Elias told the paper that weak schools and so-called black schools with a high proportion of ethnic minority children do not take the test.
‘Children need this to make them do better. The cabinet wants better educational performances and this motion is a part of that,’ Elias said. ‘We have to do better to keep up with the Chinese.’
