Green investment funds under threat

The green investment funds offered by a number of banks will disappear in the short term because the government is scrapping a key tax break, Trouw reports on Wednesday.

The paper bases its claims on a confidential report by the Dutch banking association NVB.
Some 250,000 people currently invest in green funds, the paper says. In total, the funds have some €8bn under management.
The finance ministry is planning to scrap the tax break on investing in projects which will have a ‘positive effect’ on nature and the environment. This will make these funds uneconomical to run as investors pull out, the association says.
‘If the tax break does disappear, we will look carefully if enough private investors remain,’ a spokesman for ABN Amro’s Groenbank, which manages assets of over €1bn, told the paper.
Green investments are exempt from tax up to €55,000 per taxpayer.
