Government to press ahead with CO2 storage in north

The government is pressing ahead with plans to store surplus CO2 in empty underground natural gas chambers in the north of the country, economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said on Thursday.

Verhagen was meeting leaders from Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe provinces following last week’s decision to scrap a pilot gas storage product near Rotterdam.
Verhagen said underground storage has a ‘crucial role’ in a broad energy policy and efforts to clean up the climate.
Friesland province is totally opposed to the plan, Groningen is in favour and Drenthe has not made up its mind.
Three locations have been earmarked for deep CO2 storage: the empty Boerakker and Sebaldeburen gas fields in Groningen and Eleveld in Drenthe.
