Coalition party leaders meet, weekly talks to focus on PVV
Prime minister Mark Rutte, CDA leader Maxime Verhagen and Geert Wilders, head of the anti-Islam PVV, are meeting on Monday to discuss the upheaval surrounding four PVV members of parliament, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.
The three party leaders hold regular talks to discuss government business, but insiders say the recent upsets will be the focus of this week’s meeting at the economic affairs ministry.
The CDA and VVD form a minority government which the PVV supports on economic policy in return for a crack down on immigration.
Spotlight
Last week, four PVV MPs came under the media spotlight and one, James Sharpe, resigned following allegations about his business dealings.
Insiders told the Volkskrant that Rutte and Verhagen want to find out if they can expect any more surprises.
On Friday it emerged that the public prosecution department has video footage of MP Marcial Hernandez who is alleged to have become embroiled in a brawl at a bar. Hernandez, an ex soldier, has repeatedly denied hitting another man.
Democracy
In addition, the PVV has to deal with dissident MP Hero Brinkman, who has written a party paper calling for more democracy and less emphasis on Islam.
The three parties have a majority of just one in the lower house of parliament.
