Balkenende led CDA election campaign ‘against his will’

The CDA needs to rediscover itself and re-establish itself as an open, Christian, democratic party, according to an internal report into the party’s collapse at the June 9 general election, obtained by tv show Nieuwsuur.

The CDA’s vote almost halved and the party now has just 21 MPs.
At the time, the party was too busy surviving after the collapse of the previous government in February to think about finding a successor to prime ministerJan Peter Balkenende, the report says.
Maxime Verhagen was ruled out of the job because of his controversial role in the government’s collapse. And transport minister Camiel Eurlings was firm on his wish to spend a few years in a ‘relative lull’, Nos tv quotes the report as saying.
‘After an extensive discussion, it emerged no one had any alternatives to present,’ leaving Balkenende in the job which he was effectively forced to do against his will.
