Dutch scientists have discovered that some brain cells become extra active in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, a find which could point the way to developing a new medicine, news agency ANP reports on Tuesday.

The research will be published shortly by academic magazine Brain, ANP says.
Researchers studied brain matter from 49 people who died at different stages of the disease. Even in the earliest stages, before there are any symptoms, they found signs of Alzheimer’s, the researchers say.
‘The brain would appear to compensate for the process of becoming sick,’ neurologist Dick Swaab told Trouw.
