Court rejects call to arrest Indonesian president
Judges on Wednesday rejected a call by a pro-Moluccan group to have Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrested for alleged human rights violations when he visits the Netherlands, Reuters reports.
Yudhoyono postponed his state visit to the Netherlands because of fears that he might be arrested. The Dutch authorities had said he would enjoy immunity because he is a head of state.
The three-day visit had been due to begin this week.
South Molucca is administered as a province by Indonesia, the biggest Muslim country in the world, but its Christian population wants independence.
At the end of September there was a diplomatic row between Indonesia and the Netherlands after ambassador Yunus Effendi Habibie said the planned October visit would be ‘very much in doubt’ if the PVV is part of the next coalition government.
