Belgium, Netherlands could share IMF seat
Belgium has suggested sharing a seat on the International Monetary Fund board with the Netherlands, if either of the two countries is forced to give up their place.
The IMF board is being restructured to give more say to developing countries and the Dutch and Belgian seats are under threat.
On Saturday, finance ministers at the G20 summit in South Korea agreed Europe should lose two of its seats on the 24-seat board. Neither the Netherlands nor Belgium are members of G20 and the Netherlands was not invited as an observer this time round.
Belgium’s finance minister Didier Reynders said in an interview with De Tijd newspaper the two countries could form a block along with other small European countries on the IMF.
A spokesman for Dutch finance minister Jan Kees de Jager said the Netherlands is not yet considering the proposal because it is too soon to do so.
