Village tries to tackle ‘Lloret in Holland’ reputation
The Zeeland seaside village of Renesse wants to shed its ‘Lloret de Mar in Holland’ reputation by moving dance cafes and clubs to outside the village centre, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.
Renesse, which has a winter population of just 1,400, is very popular with young people in the summer months, who flock to its ‘eight or nine’ bars and dancehalls, all concentrated in a tiny area.
‘If we want to upgrade our village and keep the youth, [moving the cafes] would be a good solution,’ Bruno van der Hoek, secretary of the local company association told the paper.
The village attracts such hoards of youngsters that other visitors are put off coming to the town, and the main street is a dismal place during the day because all the bars are closed, locals say.
Now city councillors and local entrepreneurs are to work on a plan to revitalise the village centre, but admit it will be up to the bar owners to take the decision.
In any case, next year’s massive Whitsun dance party has been moved from the village centre to a location out of town.
