Public transport users lose €500,000 a month paying by smart card
Bus, tram and train passengers are failing to claim €500,000 a month back from public transport companies because they forgot the exit swipe for their public transport smart cards, the Financieele Dagblad reports on Friday.
Just 11% of train users claim back the deposit which is deducted from their ov-chipkaart cards at the start of every journey, meaning Dutch Rail (NS) can pocket the €10 or €20 basic charge.
However, if the journey cost more than the deposit, NS misses out on income, the paper points out.
Bus and metro users forfeit the change from a €4 deposit.

In total, some 7,000 passengers a day forget to check out, the paper says.
It bases its calculations on the NS, and the Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague bus and tram companies. Regional bus firms Connexxion and Veolia declined to take part in the survey.
Transport companies say they do not earn money on the refunds because it costs a lot to send the money back.
